Town Hall

Barnsley, United Kingdom

The seal was set on the official twinning of Barnsley and Schwäbisch Gmünd in 1971. Barnsley is located in South Yorkshire. Since the first half of the seventies, Barnsley has been a "Metropolitan Borough" with 227,000 inhabitants (1998). "Berneslai" was mentioned in the Domesday Book for the first time in 1086, and obtained market rights from King Henry III in 1249.
From the Middle Ages until 1993, Barnsley lived mainly on coal mining. Due to the structural change in mining, Barnsley is endeavouring to create jobs in other areas. In accordance with English municipal law, one third of the district council is elected every year over three years.

The town's highest representative, the Mayor, is elected from within the Council for one year. The town council is led by the "Chief Executive". Barnsley Metropolitan Borough covers an area of 127,000 square miles. A number of lovely old buildings and parks, such as St Mary's Church, the country seat and the Cannon Hall Museum, with its extensive park, or the mill museum in Worsborough, the majestic 4-storey town hall made of Portland stone, were officially inaugurated by H. R. H. Edward Prince of Wales on 14 December 1933. Also worth a visit is Locke Park or the Cooper Gallery in Barnsley.

Three national British parks are not far from Barnsley: in particular, the Peak District National Park, located west of Barnsley, is famous for its beautiful scenery. Not only are the scenery and the parks in and around Barnsley very well known, so are the friendly and warm-hearted Yorkshire people. The motto contained in Barnsley's town coat-of-arms, is: "Spectemur - agendo", "Judge us by our actions".
